How to clean your camera safely using SpeckGRABBER

The Original SpeckGRABBER™

Introduction

SpeckGRABBER is a unique tool designed to remove individual contaminant particles from delicate and sensitive surfaces without danger of damaging or causing additional contamination.

A small soft washable pad on the end of the SpeckGRABBER provides a high adhesion surface that sticks to contaminant particles with considerably more cohesive force than the contaminated surface. When the SpeckGRABBER is put in contact with the particle, it adheres to the particle, while leaving no residue on the contacted surface.

The SpeckGRABBER is non-conductive, and can be used on active CCDs allowing the technician to monitor the decontamination process. The SpeckGRABBER can be used on disk drive heads, optical sensors such a CCD arrays, mirrors and lenses, UV windows, films and silicon wafers among other hard to clean surfaces. The SpeckGRABBER is available in two styles; (1) Standard, (2) Pro model with a heavy-duty rubberized grip. Both styles can be repeatedly cleaned in water, or soap solution without diminishing their adhesive qualities.

Using SpeckGRABBER

SpeckGRABBER is designed to remove dust particles visible to the naked eye. If you cannot see the particles you are trying to remove, please consider another cleaning technique.

Key to success is to ensure that the tip of the SpeckGRABBER is scrupulously clean. Refer to tip cleaning instructions below.

Best results will be achieved by using the gentlest touch to remove a dust particle. It is not necessary to press the tip onto the surface being cleaned. Use the lightest pressure you can to ‘gently ‘touch and pull’ the contaminating particle away from the surface. Never drag the tip along the surface being cleaned, use a simple touch and release action.

Caution: When cleaning the sensor on a Digital SLR, it is necessary to open the shutter on the camera to gain access to the sensor. It is essential that you are fully aware of how to open the shutter and keep the shutter open while cleaning the sensor. If the shutter closes while cleaning is taking place the camera will be damaged. Please refer to the camera manufacturer’s instructions on how to open the shutter for cleaning purposes. If you are not 100% confident in this process, please return your camera to the manufacturer for sensor cleaning.

SpeckGRABBER Tip Cleaning Instructions

SpeckGRABBER will pick-up finger oil and dust and should be cleaned prior to each use. The best method to clean the SpeckGRABBER is to dip the tip into some Kinetronics Precision Cleaning Solution and carefully dry with a soft, dust and lint-free cloth before repeat use.

If Precision Cleaning Solution is not available, carefully wash in a solution of mild soap and lukewarm water and dry thoroughly with a lint free cloth. Avoid pulling or “tugging” the tip, which will dislodge it from the SpeckGRABBER shaft.
